I owned the previous (non-motorized) version of this lens and was very pleased with it. Most of my friends got tired of me talking about how it was probably the best under-0 lens bargain you could find... better performance than Sigma's non-APO version and Nikon's cheaper (non VR) 70-300, plus a life-saving 1:2 macro feature that would let you take postage-stamp sized closeups from three feet away. Unfortunately, while photographing some turtles at a local pond, I slipped in the mud and knocked over my tripod, causing the lens to have an unfortunate encounter with the water which ended its life. Looking on the bright side, I saw this as an opportunity to replace it with the newer motorized version.

Tho I prefer to deal with Adorama (usually via the Amazon web site), this time I bought the lens from Amazon directly. Big mistake... it arrived in a large box with absolutely no padding. In other words, just knocking around loose every time the box was moved. Granted, the lens was inside its own box as well as a padded zipper case... but still, who would ship ANYTHING loose in a box, let alone delicate camera gear? Apparently... Amazon.

After trying the lens, I found it to be unacceptably soft, especially at the top end where it actually had a glow around bright objects. While it is possible that I just got a bad sample (unit-to-unit variation can be a problem, especially with cheaper lenses), it's more likely that it was damaged in shipment so I returned it and got another (this time from Adorama... lesson learned).

The second unit was packed properly, and it performed as expected... sharpness was as good as my old non-motorized version (it actually seemed a bit better at the top end, which is where I use it most of the time). But there were other improvements as well... the old version had several notorious problems, most of which are fixed in this lens.

First, the zoom ring is not stiff between 200 and 300mmm, it is smooth thruout the range.

Second, the lens focuses far faster (no kidding... my initial impression was that it was 3-5x faster in most cases). Part of the reason is that it does not hunt nearly as much, part of it is that it just moves a lot faster. The practical result of this is that I am able to track birds in flight with far more sucess than with the non-motorized version.

Third, the focusing is quieter in spite of the increased speed. This will be of considerable benefit when photographing wildlife. Out in the woods, 300mm is still not much in the grand scheme of things... most people will still have to do some stalking, and a noisy lens is going to be the kiss of death up close.

Fourth, the aperture ring and f22 lock are gone (in their place is an auto/manual focus switch). For most folks with newer cameras this change will probably go unnoticed. It actually may be an advantage for those of us who accidentally mount the lens with the aperture ring off f22... and then wonder why we are getting an error message on the LCD. ;-)

Finally, the lens cap has been replaced with a front pinch type (similar to the stock Nikon cap) which is a tremendous improvement... I had replaced the cap on my older lens with a Nikon cap because the old Sigma cap could not be put on or taken off without removing the lens hood.

Complaints? Well, the macro switch is still too small for my taste. I have problems with it when wearing gloves, and I could see it as a constant annoyance for someone with larger hands. The rotating front element could be a problem if you use split ND filters a lot. The matte finish is pleasingly non-reflective but it also picks up dirt more easily. Sharpness, especially at the top end, is not exceptional... to be expected from a lens of this price. Still, reducing the aperture a stop does help, so if you're fussy maybe you should just consider this an f8 at 300mm. But even wide open, you may find the results acceptable... most of the problems are in the corners so if you are shooting wildlife or sports or air shows, where the subject is often isolated in the center, you might get by just fine.

To sum up, I still think this lens is perhaps the best buy around for anyone looking for a longer zoom in the sub-0 range. There just isn't anything else like it for the photographer on a budget, especially if you don't want to be loaded down... with it's macro capability, light weight and reasonably long reach, this lens in combination with a wider lens may be all you'll need most of the time.

Hard to say more about this than others have already said but I will try. This is a really fun lens but also a powerful tool. That said, in many ways it is like Photoshop - the gap between cool fun shot and works of art has a mountain sized learning curve.

The double glass optic is a great choice for a starter lens. It has the largest and easiest to find area that is in focus. Finding and identifying that is key to getting predicable results. When you first start using this, I recommend finding a subject you know well that is also far enough away that you can focus on infinity. Then start shooting with no aperture ring installed at all and the lens fixed to straight ahead. This will give you maximum blur on the edges and the best chance of finding the center focus spot. I made the mistake of trying to shoot stuff close up at first and every time I moved even a tiny bit I lost the focus point. Once you get the hang of focusing, unlock the lens and start moving it around. I started with a subject that had a lot of clearly defined lines so I could move the focus and track it. Once you are comfortable doing that, moving to the aperture rings should be a piece of cake. I have posted some images but they dont really do the product justice. i recommend searching for "Lensbaby" on flickr.

One issue I have with my Lensbaby is that the aperture ring tool does not have a magnet strong enough to lift the rings. I have resorted to using a magnetic tool from my tool kit. I think I got a bad tool because it wont even pick up a ring that isnt in the lens. I need to contact Lensbaby about a replacement.

I cant speak for other brands but on my Pentax K200D I can use Aperture Priority mode and get accurate metering. I cant imagine getting decent results without it so if your brand does not support it, you might want to borrow one before taking the plunge. I assumed I would have to use all manual for the first day and frustration did not begin to describe my feelings.

Once you get past the pure joy of bending focus you will find that the Lensbaby is an excellent lens for portraits and flowers. For portraits you can put the focus on your subjects face and by adjusting the aperture determine how much else is in focus and even how quickly it transitions to blur. Same for flowers . And you can shoot using the rule of thirds in a way the really gives depth to the picture. Traditional lens makers have spent millions preventing focus drop-off at the edges forcing photographers to spend hundreds on Photoshop to blur those same edges! Now you can not only get the blur, you can get as much or as little as you want.

I highly recommend adding the Lensbaby Optic Kit as soon as possible. The difficulty progression is Double Glass, Single Glass, Plastic, Zone Plate and Pinhole but the rewards are worth it. If you can only add one lens, add the plastic. It adds an element of predictable but uncontrollable distortion that is just a ton of fun to explore.

Lensbaby is not for everyone. If your photography consists of happy snaps, documenting life or spending hours on getting tack sharp pictures, dont get one. Maybe some photographers can capture candids of people or moments with a Lensbaby but for me, every picture is a 30 second or more affair. You have to be willing to spend time both taking the pictures and learning how to take the pictures. In my opinion, the rewards justify both but you will have to decide for yourself.

I purchased this lens after much research after comparing it to the Nikon 18-200 equivalent. I finally decided on it after seeing the Nikon's prices continuing to shoot upwards and being unable to get a used one off ebay for a reasonable price. I've been using this lens for a week now in various environments and plan to keep the lens.

Overall, I've found this lens to be a good buy- I bought it to replace two lens that covered a shorter range. So far, the images are sharp enough for me, with the caveat that I am not a pixel peeper. I immediately crop and reduce the size of my pics once I get them on my computer. I was worried when I zoomed in on the pics in my camera that they wouldn't be sharp, but they look great on my smallish computer screen, for the most part. The lens feels good in hand and I enjoy the heft, especially since it balances out my D80 with battery pack and external flash. No lens creep yet.

I'd say the most frustrating thing with the camera is the way that it searches when it is focusing at the far zoom range. (UPDATE: I found out that most of the focus issue was because I made an incorrect setting on my camera- its focusing fine now) Colors appear to be appropriate, perhaps a little muted, but when I compared to my 50 mm 1.8, it was about the same, so it was probably a camera setting. There have also been a couple times where it seemed to "lock" up at the far end of the zoom. You have to go to manual and then back in order to get it go back to normal. Annoying, but its only happened 2x so far.

I really enjoy the flexibility of having this kind of range in my camera. I used to fumble around so much with my lenses and now I can just shoot. There was very little distortion that I noticed. Vibration reduction has been really helpful to me and I find myself getting a sorts of shots without my flash that I hadn't been able to get before. According to the reviews its not as good as the Nikon, but its fine for me. Bokeh (that blur in the background) looks plenty good enough for me.

All in all, this lens is all about compromise. It sacrifices a little bit of everything in order to be a lens that you don't have to think too much about. In the end, I'm keeping mine. My feeling on it is, that for 60% of the price of the Nikon, this camera is definitely 85% of the lens, with a little more reach at the end. Highly recommended by this cheapskate photag :).

I wanted a lens over 200mm for my arsenal and unfortunately, if you stick with the Nikon brand, there aren't too many options. I chose the 80-400, but I have to say that it's the one Nikon lens purchase I've had the most trouble getting excited over. Not that it isn't a great product - it is - it's just that it seemed like a step back in time since this lens hasn't kept up with the features of Nikon's phenomenally good pro lenses throughout the rest of the product line. In the end, I felt like the choice was to "settle" for this product, or spend several times more money on (say) the excellent 200-400 zoom instead. Or, I suppose you could wait for the next upgrade, but I've already been waiting a few years with no result.

The lens itself is large and heavy, somewhat "thicker" than say, a 70-200 2.8 - but not by a huge amount. It feels balanced on any of Nikon's larger cameras, but it is quite a handful. Unlike some, I find the tripod collar adequate, although I understand many recommend the Kirk collar as an important upgrade. Honestly, I tend to hand-hold the lens more often than not, so I usually have the tripod collar removed altogether. I find it's large enough to get in the way of where I'd naturally want to put my hands. The other comment on construction quality is that it really looks like a "legacy" product. Not being an AFS focusing system, it sports that old "M/A" focus control, and it also still has a manual aperture selector. Which isn't to say that it's not a high quality lens - it is, it's just showing its age. Otherwise, the controls operate smoothly and it does feel to be built to last.

From an optical point of view, I found the lens to perform better than I expected. At both extremes (80 and 400), I notice photos are a little soft in the corners with the lens wide open, but if you use f/8 or smaller, results are uniformly sharp corner to corner (this is only really noticeable on an FX sensor...DX cameras are very good even wide open). Contrast and color are also good, and images generally have that "pop" you get from any top quality lens. I have the latest 70-200 2.8 lens, and at 200mm, I'd say that images from the 80-400 are nearly - but not quite - as good overall. The 80-400 is slightly less contrasty, making some shots appear a little "flat", and the 80-400 also seems slightly more prone to flare when pointed in the direction of a bright light source.

I find the VR system works well, and with the lens zoomed out to 400mm, I can usually get sharp results with shutter speeds in the vicinity of 1/100 second, maybe a little less.

As everyone else points out, the autofocus system is somewhat slow and noisy if you're used to AFS lenses. At longer focal lengths in darker spots, it also tends to hunt. I've learned to simply switch off the autofocus and use the manual controls in these situations.

Overall, I guess I'm happy with this lens, but this is one of those lenses that I'll be looking to upgrade as soon as Nikon comes out with an AFS version that's hopefully about a stop faster and not triple the price.

I bought a group of lenses and had no intention of keeping this one. I popped it on an old D50 to test it out and simply fell in love with the optics on this thing. I don't really have a true use for it, but I think I might have to find a way to keep it. This is the only prime lens I have ever gotten my hands on and I can see why they demand such high prices.

It is rather antiquated technologically which is why I almost gave it a 4 star but the glass is what you pay for. I am actually considering selling my D60 and promoting my D50 body just so I can keep this lens. In reality I need a more capable body anyway, but investing in this kind of glass makes more sense in the long run.

I don't really agree with the other review. I did sell my lens but I did not have problems with the picture quality at all. You have to really be careful though how you set all of the settings to get pictures really far away to come in clear. This is a professional lens, and it does take some knowledge to use. As far as cheap, I do not for one minute think that this lens is cheap. It is built very well. As far as not being able to take pictures in the dark like the other review said, my God you are shooting so far away you would have to have football stadium lights for a flash if you wanted to light up the place in the dark. I really liked the lens pretty good. My only complaint is that it is heavy and you need a good tripod not some cheap piece of junk.

The descriptions of this lens are sorely lacking, so the first part of my review is information the manufacturer should have provided:

What you get in the box:

* G10 flange-mount to 58mm threaded adapter
* 58mm to 52mm adapter ring (and a 55mm to 52mm adapter ring you won't need with the G10)
* Fisheye add-on lens (52mm thread mount)
* Front and rear lens caps

In other words, you don't have to buy anything else along with this lens. If you have a Canon G10, it comes with everything you need. I had to call 47th Street Photo to confirm that.

When set up and mounted, the entire lens projects about five inches from the front surface of the camera, making it look like a miniaturized SLR.

Now that I have the lens, I understand a bit better how it works. At the camera's widest zoom angle, the fisheye circle takes up the center 1/4 of the frame, with black around it. At about mid-zoom, the majority of the frame is image, with black corners. At full zoom, you have roughly the equivalent of the camera by itself at its widest angle, and no barrel/fisheye distortion is evident. With the variable zoom, you can choose whether you have a rectangular or circular fisheye effect, although the barrel distortion becomes much less evident as you move toward rectangular.

The glass quality is pretty good. Images are clear, and the autofocus system works correctly. Opteka recommends setting the camera to a narrow aperture and focus at infinity, although shooting in low light with normal (large aperture) settings seems to work well with the G10. There is noticeable chromatic aberration at the edges of the fisheye circle, but we're talking about a lens here.

The mount is a little shaky feeling -- the add-on barrel doesn't snick solidly into place like an SLR lens does (which is a pity, it wouldn't have been hard to make the mount that carefully; I don't know if this is a limitation of the camera or the Opteka mount, though). It's not going to come off, but it's a bit mobile on the camera, which feels a bit cheesy. The extension barrel and lens themselves are nicely machined, and appear to be high quality. Although the Opteka copy says it's "Made and Designed in Japan" (from their website), the lens I received is clearly marked CHINA. No shock for the price, but a bit off-putting to have expectations set incorrectly (the box says "Designed in Japan" on the side, and "Made in China" on the bottom). Until I saw the CHINA marking, I would have been willing to believe the lens was made in Japan as well, so this isn't a ding on the quality, more a ding on Opteka's marketing department.

Due to its size, this add-on lens takes the G10 from "barely pocketable" to requiring a bag of some variety. It nearly doubles the bulk of the camera if you want to carry both G10 and fisheye with you.

I'm very satisfied with the lens, and highly recommend it if you have occasional recreational use for a fisheye lens, and don't want to drop 0+ on a decent fisheye for your SLR. I would not recommend it for regular or professional use except as an option of last resort, mostly due to the shaky mount and likely marginal durability.

UPDATE: February 17, 2010

I have upgraded to the G11, and am pleased to report that this add-on lens also works well with the G11. There have been no problems with the lens, although it hasn't seen a whole lot of action. I have one new gripe, which is that with the supplied lens caps, the extension tube and fisheye lens must be separated in order to have a lens cap on the back of the fisheye. It's not a huge deal, but I'd prefer to have a rear lens cap that fits on the extension tube instead of threading onto the back of the lens unit, so I don't have to unscrew the two pieces every time the lens is put away.

OK, if I were a 16 year old girl instead of a 59 year old man the subject line of this review might be "OMG! OMG!" I cannot get over how well this teleconverter works with my DSC-H50 with its Super Steady Shot! I am not a professional, but I am an avid amateur. I own several 35mm bodies and lenses up to 400mm plus 2x and 3x converters. I am very familiar with the problems of taking photos with longer zoom lenses with and without tripods.

To be able to use Smart Zoom with the teleconverter on the H50, do not change the settings to tell the camera you are using the teleconverter. This will allow the Smart Zoom to give you an amazing 137x total zoom at the VGA (640x480) resolution. Granted, this resolution does not give the absolute best image, but I am amazed at what a great image it does produce. Admittedly, I have been kind of pushing the envelope to see just what the camera and lens were capable of. Today I took some images I could not believe were possible. Braced carefully, but still handheld, I took a picture of a parked car over 600 feet from my building (I paced it off) from my 17th floor office. The license plate was very clear. With care, I could probable have stretched it out to 1000ft and still have been able to make out the plate with in-camera zoom. Don't get me wrong. I don't care about license plates; it was just a handy test of picture clarity. As I was showing the camera to a co-worker he saw a pigeon light on a building a full city block away. All I could see was a dark speck, but I zoomed in, and snapped off a completely handheld shot, no bracing at all. The pigeon was recognizable. With any steadying at all I'm sure it would have been a clear image.

I have not tried any of the higher resolution settings that limit the Smart Zoom significantly, but I am sure the lens will produce great images. A tripod would produce even better images at extreme zoom, but I am amazed at the results handheld with decent bracing.

This lens is a great accessory for the Sony DSC-H50.

Even though I've only had this lens less than a week I am impressed with it. I have gotten some shots where the blues and greens are so saturated it looked like a polarizer was used, and one wasn't. Simply beautiful.

There are no threads on the lens hood for filters. I have tried holding a square sunset filter in front of the lens with good results. The Auto focus is fast & smooth and quiet. I'll post photo's when I get a chance.

I got the full width of my house in the picture while standing five feet back from the bottom porch step. The lens cap slides over the hood. I may try to make up a series of adaptor rings to slide over the hood so I can use filters on this lens.

Sigma has delivered very good product in this segment, much better than the cheapo 55-250mm from Canon. Good build, nice features (HSM, IS, IF design). I got mine for 85$ as new, for use with my Sony A100 Alpha, therefore, i can only speak out how this Tamron performs on my A100 only, 1st it very light, small, well build, got internal focus, comes with petal hood. Well! you all know that Sony A100 has build in image stabilization in body, so all lenses will be stabilized with what so call Super steady shot from Sony. For that reason this Tamron lens works well with A100, it gives me nice colors, neutral, contrast, and sharp at all ranges. But the sharpest i found is between the 50-150mm step down to f8-11. at 200mm i found a light purple fringes.Its small and compact fits well with my Sony body too.Filter size is 62mm. It has zoom lock so you can lock your zoom when shooting downward or upward. Metal mount made in Japan. It is a real bargain for those who wants good images without sacrified your wallet. Not all Tamron lenses are great, but so is the other brands!. I personally got many, many soft lenses from Canon and Nikon in my life. For that reason i switched to Sony.
In all, im very happy with mine, for the price i wont complain at all, its an everyday lens..i also got a Sony R1 which has a zeiss lens with real 24-120mm at f2.8.Both together i got myself a great combo for all shooting.
IF you found this lens dont work for other camera bodies, its not my fault.You should buy Sony A100.

This is a consumer-class lens with near professional-class performance. To give this lens 5 stars would be misleading, because such a high performance rating should be reserved for lenses at the tops of their respective class (namely, L-Series lenses and some of the better primes). I've been using the 28-105 lens as my take-everywhere-don't-worry-if-it-breaks lens and I have to tell you, I've had some GREAT results with it. Vignetting is minimal, and images are generally sharp, with good results on prints that are as large as 11"X14". I've had a few images published with this lens, but I generally reserve my fine art photography for my L-Series lenses and primes or my medium format camera, which give markedly better contrast, color correction and sharpness, but are kind of pricey. I'd really like to give this lens a 3.75 rating, but unfortunately, this site just gives you five choices. If you're looking for a better-than-average consumer zoom, go with this one. Run, RUN away from any of the other consumer zooms in this range (e.g., 35-70, 28-80) unless you're going to fork over a few extra bucks for the new Image Stabilizing lenses, which give better results. I hope this helps someone out there make an informed decision.

I've been using this lens to shoot basketball games on dim courts for several years. It's next to my 135mm f2, 300mm f2.8, and 70-200mm f2.8. It is not an L lens but what does that mean? Well, the 85mm f1.8 will get you chromatic aberration (also known as purple fringing) in certain conditions. These conditions fortunately are limited to the f1.8-f2.8 range when you have a bright light source behind a darker subject. Once you get to f2.8, the fringe is almost gone and even at f1.8 it's not likely to ruin your shot. Luckily almost every point and shoot digital camera suffers from much worse purple fringing so there are lots of actions in Photoshop to clear it up if you must remove it.

Besides that, it's just as good as any of my expensive L lenses. Wide open is just a little soft but f2.0 is just as sharp as the much more expensive 135mm at f2.0. Autofocus is as fast as any of these lenses except for the 300mm f2.8 which has a huge USM motor and the extra two stops of light are a big help in dim arenas. If you're shooting on a small court, shooting at f2.0 will do a great job of blurring the background making your players look like they were playing on a much larger court.

Some photographers are gobsmacked that I would dare to shoot sports with a lens that doesn't have Canon's elegant red ring (denoting an expensive L lens) when I have "superior" lenses like the 70-200mm f2.8. I guess that's because they can't deal with a lens that has some color fringing. I can tell you that the 85mm f1.8 will focus faster than any f2.8 lens I have in dim conditions (including the 300mm f2.8).

I've been using this lens for about 10 months. I use it on my D60. I mostly use primes because they are so much faster (better for low light) and they are far sharper than any zoom that I can afford. So for any camera I own, I usually have one zoom that will do the job when no primes can. This lens fits that role nicely.

This lens has what many negative reviewers say: Pincushion distortion at the extreme wide end and vigneting at the extreme tele end. However, the image sharpness and color rendition is really good with this lens at every focal length and if you use NIKON Capture NX2 the distortions at all focal lengths are removed perfectly (that is the great thing about using an image editor made by your camera manufacturer...). This is consumer grade so it is SLOW. Use outdoors during the day or use the flash.

I paid 0.00 for this lens brand new...I know I got a great deal and I don't regret it at all. The construction is basic consumer grade (plastic city...)so I think a reasonable price for this lens is [...] ...TOPS. If you can find a great deal grab it. But be careful mounting and unmounting and try to avoid dropping the lens or your camera with this lens attached! You are paying for LOTS of glass here! It is difficult to make a lens sharp at every focal length on a zoom this wide but they did it really well.

Bottom line: this lens could be cheaper due to build quality but the zoom range, extreme sharpness at every focal length (for a consumer zoom), and good color rendition make it worthy of a 4 star review in my opinion.

And oh yeah, someone said something about bokeh in these reviews...Anyone who is buying this lens and is complaining about bokeh just doesn't know enough to know better. If you want bokeh get a fixed focal length lens with a wide aperature (f1.4 or f1.8). I know of no zooms under ,000.00 that have decent bokeh. Lenses to try for better bokeh: Nikon 35MM f1.8 DXS G ($[...]), the 50mm F1.4G ($[...]), the Sigma 50mm 1.4 HSM ($[...]) or the BADASS 85mm 1.4 (BIG effin' bucks). You get what you pay for and you should be paying for GLASS to get great shots NOT cameras!

I order this lens from Amazon, well, the package came fast as expected because of 1 day shipping. It's okay to pay extra to ensure the transaction and service. I am totally a newbie in photography. In the very first place, I just want a cam that is much better than point&shoot cam I have so I bought Canon XS. The cam is great at the price as it is the cheapest cam with live view function.

Once I got the Sigma 18-125 lens, it made me feel solid, well build, and somewhat heavier than 18-55 kit lens. I prefer not comment anything about picture quality or sharpness as I am new. I have spent 3 days shooting about 200 pics during daytime, I like it. BUT I opened return to change new one! It was because I feel not so sure about the noise inside the lens and I noticed the hard time to get it focus at night inside my room.

I assumed that it is something wrong while it was shipped. Amazon did a terrible job on packing the item. They were only 2 air bags inside the parcel and the lens box ran loose inside. I just got new unit this afternoon and will try again tonight under the same condition. This time they put 3 air bags inside the parcel. I haven't try it yet but feel the lens has less noise.

If Amazon read this, pleas improve your packaging quality. I used to order a sdhc from other site and it was packed in the same parcel size with tons of foam. This is 0 lens not cloth, please be more CAREFUL.

Anyway, I still recommend you to order from Amazon because you can still change it in case anything wrong.

As an oldtime Minolta 35mm photographer, I was excited when Sony took over the brand because I thought all my old lenses would have a new lease of life. But that didn't happen - about three years ago I purchased the 18-200mm Sony zoom with an A100 and shot comparisons with my Minolta AF lenses. Results looked identical or the Sony lens was better in some cases which meant that all my old Minolta lenses stayed in storage. So for the next year or so I only ever traveled with one camera and one lens - for the first time in my life. The 18/200 lens was a fantastic creative tool and very reliable but after a while I started to find its limitations. It's slow, and even with the in-camera stabilization of the A350, low light shots were disappointing. Some reviewers report high noise problems at relatively low ISO, but I very rarely get visible noise in pictures because I don't shoot in the dark with this lens. I started being more critical in reviewing my photos and had to admit that edge sharpness wasn't perfect with chromatic aberration and flare in highlights, although this was usually only apparent at print sizes above letter or A4. I decided to go back to basics - carrying prime lenses around instead of zooms. I bought a Sony 50mm f1.4 to start, which is an absolutely amazing lens. Obviously very fast, but tonally accurate at any aperture and razor sharp. Only problem is that not every photo I want to take, fits into a 50mm focal length, which is I think equivalent to about 75mm in 35mm full frame. The difference between the stated focal length of a lens and actual focal length on a digital camera is to do with the size of the sensor, and as each brand and even each model have varying sized sensors, it's difficult to be certain.
[In case you never shot 35mm, the actual negative "full frame" size is 24mm x 36mm which gives a diagonal of 43mm - the so-called "normal" equivalent of a human eye's coverage, ignoring peripheral vision. Photographers decided that around 50mm was normal, so anything lower than that became a wider angle, anything higher was a telephoto. But digital sensors come in many sizes all the way up to "full frame" which means the diagonal changes too. So a 50mm "normal" lens will be a telephoto on a digital camera if the diagonal of its sensor is say, 30mm. The actual distance that a light ray travels from the front element of the lens to the sensor or film plane, gives you the focal length of a lens. Zoom lenses vary focal lengths by moving lens elements, mirror telephotos by bouncing light backwards and forwards inside the lens housing. If you divide the focal length of a lens by the diameter of the front element, you'll get the f stop, which is why "fast" lenses have wide front elements. Slow zoom lenses like the Sony 18/200 sacrifice a fast f stop for smaller, lighter optics].
Although the 50mm f1.4 is so sharp, I was still itching for the creative framing freedom of the 18/200 zoom. So now I'm back to the bad old days - I carry around an A100 with the 50mm Sony attached, and in my bag I have an A350 with a Sigma 28/70 f2.8 zoom, a Sony 11/18 f4.5/5.6 zoom together with the big gun - the expensive and very heavy, but truly extraordinary Sony G series 70/200mm f2.8 zoom. So now I can take sharp photographs of almost anything in semi-darkness if required, but I'm lugging about 6 kilos of gear. My wife thinks I'm crazy - she likes using the Sony camera, so now she has her own A350 with my old 18/200 lens and is very happy with the results. In the end it depends what sort of a photographer you are, and what you do with the photos. I'm carrying a big bag of tricks that will photograph anything to a very high standard - but it's not very convenient on vacation ! The Sony 18/200 zoom is not up to professional standard, but for the price, performance and convenience it's hard to beat for everyday use.

When my wife dropped and broke my Nikkor 18-200Vr lens two days before Hawaiian vacation, I needed a quick replacement. I am so glad I got Sigma 17-70. It stayed on my D300 90% of the time. I love this lens. It is very sharp, as sharp as my Nikkor 18-135 and probably sharper. The 2.8 at wide end is great. The range is respectable for most application and as a walk around. HSM works great and the lens focuses quickly in low light, unlike my Nikon 18-200VR lens (which is twice as expensive). The built is excellent. I took off one star on features because of lack of OS, which would be nice. Overall, I highly recommend this lens, and I specifically recommend it above Tamron 17-50 2.8, which costs 0 more than Sigma, but focuses much slower in low light, despite constant F2.8.

One thing though, at wide end, you have barrel distortion, and it is pronounced and i mean pronounced, to the point, that the Ocean on a background may look like a portion of a large circle. Even PT Lens program struggles with fixing the distortion. However, I personally don't care about barrel distortion, as much as I care about sharpness. I can't stand soft photos! But I just wanted to point that distortion is there.

I bought Maxxum 7D because I already own a set of Maxxum lenses with my previous film camera. However, because digital camera increase 1.5 times of the lens' focal length, I needed a wide angle lens. I am reasonably content with this lens. But beware, at 70 mm is virtually unusable if you are wishing to take quality portrait shots i.e., "fringing" or a cloudy haze around the edges is very noticeable at f2.8 (If you close the aperture down to f +5. less fringing but also less "bokeh" effect) But i suppose that is to be expected from a zoom lens. If you are concerned with detail or low abberations don't trust the lense after about 55 mm

Have taken 20 by 30 poster shots e.g.,(400 ISO 40mm f3.2 1/30 canon XT rebel) for a local theatre where the colors and detail were very impressive e.g., can see picked threads/fiber in the costumes (almost too good). If you really desire to see how this lens performs, go to the pbase website... you can search by lens/camera used etc.

This is just a plain sweetheart of a lens. It covers the useful 18-35 mm range (which is 27-52mm on a Nikon digital SLR, which is a VERY useful range). This lens costs less than half the price of the (expensive) professional Nikon 17-35, and does almost as nice a job. Sufficiently nice, in fact, that most amateurs will not discern much, if any, difference. While not built like a tank, I think that the quality of construction on this one is excellent, and more than adequate for enthusiastic amateurs and even some pros.

On a Nikon digital SLR, which will use the center portion of this lens (due to the size of the sensor in the SLR) you can expect excellent, even spectacular results. This is a fabulous lens for landscape and nature shots, portraits, or just plain walking around taking pictures. Someone who only wanted one lens that was not a telephoto could do much worse than to select this excellent, versatile lens. This one is great for parties, vacations, and the works.

The images I have shot with this lens have all featured superb contrast, are very sharp, and have beautiful color rendition. There just is not a lot not to like about this lens. I give it 4 stars for overall performance, but 5 stars for value and price/performance. Some lenses just get it all together and work and become keepers. This is one of those.

Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Medium Telephoto Macro Lens for Sigma SLR Cameras Review

I have had this lens for more than a year so I know all the Pros and Cons; I did not just buy it and I am not writing a spur of the moment review. If you are debating between this lens and the Nikon one, I would go with this one. I am not saying this one in better than the Nikon because I haven't used the Nikon, but I don't imagine it is 0 better.

Now there are reviews that complain about the auto-focusing on this lens. It is a Macro lens meaning its field of focus is very small at 2.8 so it will tend to go back and forth at times, especially if there is a lot of things in the viewfinder. If you know how to use a DSLR then should be able to Manual Focus it. When shooting portrait style photos I have no problem with the autofocus, now with nature it doesn't always want to focus perfectly no, but like I said above it is a Macro lens and focuses very tight. Also a one person said to go to Manual Focus you have to flip the switch on the camera, one the lens, and move the focusing ring. Which is not true. The switch on the lens is a focus limiting switch. Which locks the camera in full minimum focus ratio, meaning it will focus closer up, or you can limit it.

I personally don't like the lens hood because it screws on, instead of twist and lock, which also means you can't put a filter on the lens directly while using the lens hood. Instead you have to put the filter on the hood itself.
Also it fits the Nikon but doesn't lock in the camera body as easy or smoothly, again it still fits and works fine.

I personally love my sigma lens and will definitely buy my next lens through Sigma. Most likely will be the 50mm Macro.

This lens is great. Before I purchased I had a Pentax K10D, 18-55mm kit, and FA 100mm macro.

Build: 9/10
Although this IS a DA* lens, don't assume this lens is made of solid metal, although this is not a bad thing at all. About 80% of the lens is covered by the soft, rubbery rings and the only part that isn't made of rubber is the golden DA* ring, green DA indicator ring at the bottom, and the medium between the MF ring and zoom ring. Don't make this a deciding factor though, because this lens is made of real high quality plastics and most of it is in rubber anyways.

Auto-focus Performance: 9/10
The AF is relatively quiet compared to my other lenses, but it is about the same speed as them. In broad day light this lens is a dream to use, even in low light it works pretty well (it will accurately AF in a room that has about 2 80 watt+ light bulbs but anything less bright the lens will not accurately AF but this is a problem with MOST if not ALL lenses). The lens basically has the speed of the FA 100mm on focus limiter and the quietness of Canon USM. The SDM sound is comparable to the Sony 70-200mmG lens just for reference, speedwise and sound wise.

Manual Focus Performance: 8.5/10
The MF ring is very smooth and slightly damped and about equivalent to my macro lens (although not as precise due to the clamp that exists on that lens). It is not comparable to the old K/M/A/M42 lenses that have extremely damped rings, but compared to the Canon and Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses, this is about the same or better (according to user).

General Usage 9.5/10
I spent a lot of time debating whether to get this lens or the Sigma 70-200mm. After 5 months of constantly working I had enough money to finally purchase one of the lenses. For shooting events (in-door or outdoor), weddings, or in-door sports, this lens is a dream. Even the 50mm isn't wide enough for me sometimes (That's why I am going to purchase a used 35mm f/2) To be honest, if you compare 50mm to 70mm, I don't even know how I would survive. The 50-70mm is REALLY useful. For shooting outdoor sports or where you can't get real close, the 70-200mm lenses might suit you better, but even 200mm isn't really long enough for sports or birding and adding a TC would make them really bad quality (although from the Tamron TC shots that is subjective). The Sigma performs much softer at 200mm and especially with the 1.4X TC.
Also remember this lens weighs only about 1.5 lbs (700 grams) and about 1.7lbs (800grams) with hood on. The 70-200mm lenses weigh about 3 lbs (1300 grams). This lens, although quite big with hood on, is just small enough to where it doesn't scare your subjects. If this lens was any bigger width wise or length wise, some subjects would freak out and some of your pictures might look artificial. For those of you that don't know if you can or can't handle the weight, I recommend going to [...] and renting a 50-135mm AND 70-200mm for 3 or 7 days and see if you can handle the weight/ focal lengths. For most 135mm won't be long enough for wild life or out door sports, but at the same time, 70mm might be too much for indoor/ out door events and weddings.
Another awesome quality of this lens is the weather sealing. At first I was extremely skeptical of the weather sealing until a unfortunate turn of events forced me to use this lens under the rain. In the end, it was STILL working with no water ANYWHERE. I don't suggest putting this under a faucet or waterfall though because the weather seals can only handle light/medium rain, dust storms, snow, and sand. Anything more extreme will allow sand to scratch your elements, water to ruin the AF motor and cause fungus/mold, or make your elements "misty". This is also a big plus over the third party offerings (although they aren't bad at all from the images I have seen)

Image Quality: 10/10
Now this is where the lens REALLY shines. It is sharp as my macro lens even when it is set to f/5.6 and my 50-135mm is wide open (even more contrasty too!). If you stop it down it gets even MORE sharp, although there isn't enough head room because f/2.8 is already near perfectly sharp. The photozone review of this lens isn't great, but from user reviews and other online reviews, I can agree with them. This lens is unbeatable IQ wise.

Overall: 9.7/10

I'd say the only reason this lens isn't perfect is because of the rather small FL range. If this lens was 50-200mm f/2.8 OR a 35mm-135mm f/2.8, it would be perfect, but that would make it super expensive (the Olympus 50-200mm f/2.8-3.5 variant of that is about 00 and it isn't even f/2.8 at 200mm). If you love to shoot portraits, weddings, events, or indoor sports, I can highly recommend this lens.

47th St. Photo is an excellent vendor. My order shipped quickly and was well packaged. However, the first time I used the lens, when I went to take it off my E-500 something stripped the threads. The T-mount adapter was probably the culprit, it might have had a burr on it. Anyway, the lens threads were ruined. I did not drop the lens or abuse it in anyway. 47th Street photo did not blink an eye. They sent me instructions, I returned the lens and got a replacement and another T-mount adapter right away. Kudos.

The lens itself is average, low-end quality optics, entirely sufficient for ordinary shooting on a limited budget. It has a narrow depth of field because of its fixed aperture so be prepared for some close focusing problems. You will probably need, as I have, to take several photos and vary the focus very slightly with each one in order to get the degree of crispness on your primary subject. I have taken about 30 photos with it thus far and am learning the lens. Don't expect photos you can print in large format right away but I believe, with proper lighting and patience, I will be able to get some excellent photos that I would have been beyond the range of my other lenses. However, keep in mind, you are getting what you pay for. It's a good lens for the price and if you are out in the high Sierras and you drop it, well, you won't be out of pocket for too much.

Like I said, good value for the price.

Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM IF Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras Review

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and so, I think, is one's opinion of a camera lens. I've learned over the years that lens reviews are helpful, but they are just opinions. Yes, for sure, you generally get better optics with more expensive lenses, but it's certainly not a guarantee. And for reasons one can only wonder about, oftentimes two copies of the same lens will produce very different results. For example, my friend Sara, who is as nuts about buying (we're like compulsive buyers) and using Canon lenses as I am about buying and using Nikon ones, has a Canon EF-S 18-55 kit lens that produces images so tack sharp through its whole range that would make you cry.

And so it goes with super zooms, these wonderful lenses that go from pretty wide to very long. If you look at the reviews of any of them, some people claim horrible results, while others scratch their heads, because they're just loving them to death.

My first superzoom was a Sigma 18-200 which I got about five years ago and I was blown away with what I could do with just one lens. Plus my shots were pretty darn sharp. The lens was more expensive then, than it is now. It's still a good lens, it weighs a couple ounces less than a pound and if I only could have been satisfied, I'd have saved a bundle of money. Ah well. Anyway, I had an opportunity to try out the Tamron 18-200 as well back then, but I decided on the Sigma. It was a coin toss. At the time I thought both lenses would be good general, all purpose, walkabout lenses. They wouldn't be as sharp or fast as primes and wouldn't be as light as shorter zooms, but heck, one lens which went all the way from 18 to 200mm (okay 27 to 350mm in the real world), such a deal.

Both lenses were five star lenses as far as I was concerned, both still are, because they are what they are, a very good compromise. If you're expecting a lens that will reach out across a dark night and grab a shot of lovers making out by the beach, then you don't want these lenses, but if you're looking for a good general walkabout lens, both will suit you and they won't break your bank.

But they don't have image stabilization and when Sigma came out with it, I had to have it. So I shelved the Sigma zoom I had, (thankfully I didn't sell it) and bought the Sigma 18-200 OS and Sigma's Optical Stabilizer worked great. I got sharper handheld shots in lower light, but they came at a price, almost half a pound. It doesn't sound like much, eight ounces (7.6 to be exact), but try carrying it around on your shoulder all day long. I really noticed the difference, especially when I was shooting.

I probably wouldn't have gone to that auction site with my fairly new lens, if it hadn't been for Tamron. They came out with their Tamron 18-250 and I had to have it. A bigger reach, the heck with image stabilization. Not only could I go all the way from 27 to 375mm in the real world, but I got back a bit over six ounces, the lens was lighter. So now I had two super zooms, which was good, because I go out people shooting with my sister a lot.

So one would think I'd be satisfied, but when the Nikon 18-200 came out, well Nikon optics in a superzoom. I had to have it, so the Tamron went up for auction (because I just loved the Sigma, even though it didn't reach as far). The Nikon lens focused faster, but not that much faster then the other two, had image stabilization and was faster at the long end and it took great shots, but it weighed more than the other lenses, coming in at a whopping 20 ounces and it was creepy, creepy, creepy and with no zoom lock. The other lenses had almost no zoom creep and they had a zoom lock, which I never used. Very annoying the zoom creep was, still, great shots from a great lens.

Satisfied, well for awhile, then came 2008 and the Tamron 18-270 with their VC version of image stabilization and up for auction went my expensive Nikkor lens. Yeah, I still hung on the my first super zoom, the Sigma. For sure the Nikkor was a five star lens, but a girl can't justify more than two super zooms at any one time.

The Tamron lens actually weighed a fraction less than the Nikkor it replaced. It was a bit slower on the long end, was a bit stiff in the zooming, but easy to get used to and almost no, sometimes no, zoom creep and it has a lock. It's just simply one heck of a lens. Sometimes it's a bit slow to autofocus in lowlight, but still I think it finds its focus faster than I would, but not as fast as the Nikkor.

I should add here that Nikon has upgraded their 18-200 adding a zoom lock. I've played with one and not only have they added that zoom lock, but it doesn't seem to creep nearly as much, but that could just be the copy I used. I should also mention that Sigma has come out with their Sigma 18-250 OS which I was lucky enough to use for a month. That is just one super fine lens. It focuses fast and I think it finds its focus better in low light than the Tamron 18-270. Also this new Sigma has a super quiet motor, though I've never really been bothered by the sound of a focusing lens.

By reading other reviews of these lenses, I've learned that they are all subject to zoom creep, so I suppose in the main, I've been lucky. All of these lenses are very good, at least all of the copies I've used. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend any of them. However, if you go with Nikon, you're going to be paying an awful lot more. You get a slightly faster lens on the long end and you get Nikon quality, but Sigma and Tamron give quality as well and Tamron warranties their lenses for six years, so they're pretty confident that they're building a great product (and now they're part of Sony).

So through my whole super zoom experience, which one do I wind up using the most? You guessed it, that Sigma I bought five years ago. Like the proverbial Timax, "It takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'." If the day is bright and I'm going people shooting it's the one I put on my camera, because it's light and it's images are true.

This is by far my favorite lens. In several reviews you'll see that people have said it's great for portraiture. In my opinion, it's great for everything. Even though this is not a zooming lens, I find that I use it more than any other lens in my bag. It's that flexible. The bokeh that it renders is wonderful. However, the most important thing to me is how sharp this lens is. It is absolutely tack sharp. Many people have said that it is one of the sharpest lenses Nikon has ever made. You will not be disappointed. The one issue with this lens is that you need to get very close to your subject if you're doing 1:1 macro work. Like others here have noted, that makes it pretty difficult to use for insect photography. However, that is a known limitation of a lens with a focal length of 60mm... If you want to get away from your subject a bit, you might want to consider the 105mm Micro Nikkor (which I'm sure is just as sharp as this one). If you own the Nikon D40, D40x, or D60, you will have to manually focus with this lens. I have the D40, and that's no problem for me. You can buy the AF-S version of this lens, but it will cost you extra, and for someone like me, it's not worth it. The focusing ring is very nice with this lens. It's well weighted, and doesn't feel flimsy (Nikon put extra effort into this focusing ring, because this is a macro lens, and you need to manually focus when you're doing macro work).

Overall: I HIGHLY recommend this lens to ANYONE with a Nikon camera. You will not be disappointed with its performance one bit, and the macro capability might open some new doors for your photography.

By the way, at the time of my writing of this review, the current price for this lens is 9, sold by "Wall Street Photo" (a crummy 3rd part seller on amazon) - DON'T BUY IT AT THAT PRICE. I say this for 2 reasons:

1.) You can buy the AF-S version of this lens for even less than that

2.) You can buy this lens for about 9 from a reputable dealer like B&H Photo Video

To me, the lens is actually worth 9 (in other words, it's priceless to me), but it's pointless spending that much when you don't have to.

This lens is quite a performer considering how much it cost. The lack of AF and auto exposure will keep the point and shoot crowd away - but those who know how to use an SLR in Full Manual will be delighted by the images that can be captured by this lens.

The body is made of plastic - but a very sturdy and heavy plastic that lends confidence to the user. The mount is metallic. The glass itself is a little eerie to look at and can make some people uncomfortable when pointing in their direction. The inability to use filters is a bit of a letdown.

Aperture is fully manual and is controlled by a ring on the body. This will dim your view in your viewfinder when you stop it down. In low light situations it is recommended that you open her up all the way to compose then set the aperture before the shot.

Would recommend to others who want to experiment with a fisheye lens, as the cost of higher quality fisheyes gets quite steep.

this lens has served me well. i take soccer pictures of the kids on a weekly basis and use this lens with a canon elan 2 camera with at least 800 speed film for day and 1600 speed film for night with great results . even when enlarging photos great results are possible. only drawback is you need to be far enough away ,as say the bleachers or stands, to have a good vantage point. not for sideline pictures for that i recomend the tamron 80-200 af lens which allows for close up action.

I've used Leica M-cameras since the 1960s. Leica optics have always been excellent, but with a price. I was able to pick up this lens a few years ago, and it's the best lens with 21mm coverage I've ever owned. In most images, you won't notice the two stops of vignetting at f/2.8. Contrast and sharpness yield pictures you want to reach into and grab. Stopped down to f/4 and beyond, the vignetting goes away and excellent image quality extends to the corners.

The 21mm f/2.8 Elmarit-M ASPH outperforms Canon's EF 16-35mm f/2.8L at 21mm. I prefer the Elmarit for food and some architectural photography, but if you're used to seeing exactly what you'll get on film or pixels, this rangefinder lens isn't for you.

You'll need a separate 21mm finder to use the Elmarit on M-series Leicas or one of Voigtlander's M-mount Bessas. Beware Leica's plastic 21mm finder, 12 008. The mounting foot has a tendency to fall off, and it's hard to find an adhesive to reliably fix it.

Much better is Leica's metal Tri-Finder, 12 013. It works for 21mm, 24mm, and 28mm lenses on 35mm cameras. Its only downsides are its slight field curvature at 21mm, and its somewhat large size.

I have had this lens for 3 weeks now. I will write a more extended review of this lens after several months of use but for now, all that I can say is that this has got to be the best lens I have ever used with my Nikon D300 and D700. It is an exceptionally well crafted lens that takes such beautiful photos that it makes me want to shoot all day long.

I am however prompted to post this early review below to warn potential buyers from getting this lens from Adorama.

I ordered this lens from Amazon for ,450 which was fulfilled by Adorama last August 2009. When the lens arrived, I found for some unexplained reason that the hood would not mount on the lens. So I wrote to Adorama to ask about my options.

After waiting for three days, Adorama replied by email ... discussing a compact flash card!

I wrote back immediately pointing out that the response was mis-directed, again explained the problem, and repeated my requests as to the options available to me on how to address the problem.

Four days later (thus one week later), Adorama replied ... by asking me to try reinstalling the hood! What went through my mind while reading the email replay is unprintable here. But surely, a person buying a Zeiss lens worth ,450 can be expected to know how to mount the hood on the lens. I had of course repeatedly tried mounting the hood on the lens before even writing to Adorama. What was Adorama thinking of when it asked me to try reinstalling the hood of this lens a week after I wrote to it?

I replied to Adorama and explained that I had repeatedly tried reinstalling the hood but it still would not fit. I also admonished Adorama as to how unresponsive it has been and invited Adorama to respond to my request. As of this time of writing (Sept. 17, 2009), Adorama has still not replied back.

Having waited long enough, I immediately wrote to Zeiss about the problem. Zeiss asked me to check whether the locking pin on the hood may have been mis-aligned and emailed me a photo showing a mis-aligned locking pin and giving instructions on how this could be reset. I checked and replied that the hood locking pin was properly aligned but that the hood would not fit. Zeiss was puzzled and it seems that this has not happened before. But a day later, Zeiss informed me that they will be sending me a replacement hood. I was then overseas but Zeiss did not hesitate to send me the replacement hood by FedEx with taxes and duties fully paid. I did not spend a single cent.

To my great relief, the hood installed without any hint of difficulty or drama. This affirmed and reinforced my decision to buy from Zeiss.

I had bought several accessories from Adorama several times in the past without any problem when these were not available from Amazon. But this was the first time I bought a big-ticket lens from Adorama. I had considered Adorama as equal to B&H Photo. How wrong I was. This incident taught me never to buy from Adorama again.

EDIT Nov. 16, 2009: Zeiss just announced today that it will be releasing a chipped version of this manual-focus lens. The new lens will be designated as "ZF.2" to differentiate these from the standard ZF lenses. With this new version, users of the Nikon D300/D700/D3 will no longer have to enter the lens focal length and apeture before shooting. Users of the Nikon D40, D60, D70, D80, D90, D3000 and D5000 will now be able to meter using this newer version of the lens.

I am a recovering pro shooter (semi-retired) and bought this lens to shoot my grandchildren in sports activities. I have fallen in love w/it. It is the largest of 4 Sigma lenses for my Nikons (2-300's, 1-200) and I bought it on a whim. WOW! Nice and crisp, can be handneld even by 66 year-old shooter! OS is not overly noisy, certainly not distracting and has given me the freedom from tri/mono-pods for daylight sports, F2.8 isn't necessary in sunlight for me. I saved a bundle,built a rep as the greatest G-Pop and compromised nothing in the process. BTW, I have some wonderful wildlife shots as well, since I live within a mile of the Delaware River.I recommend this lens w/o equivication under the uses I have put it to. Is it the best? No, but w/o it I couldn't have gotten the images I have. That's the best.

I bought this lens as a birthday gift for my wife. We use it with our Canon Digital Rebel XT and it works perfectly. The lens has a very good picture quality and is very easy to attach/remove from the camera. Of course, it comes with lens covers for both ends of the lens and they are very good quality covers; actually, IMO, better than the lens covers that our Canon lens came with. They stay on well and provide great protection for traveling.

The lens has a switch on it to go from normal photography to macro shots. Overall, I was impressed with the quality and ease of use with macro photos with this lens. It is easy to take good quality macro shots with this lens (and trust me, I'm a beginner!).

Overall, I am very well pleased with this lens and think you will be too!

The kit is great, it has all the items promised, and arrived with good packing.

The Samsonite bag:- Very good, very sturdy, waterproof and it is heavily padded on all sides for protection. It has the option of multichambering and customising the middle big chamber. has two side and one front pocket, all chained.

Lens CLeaning System:- is good. But how long will it last? The screen covers are useful.

2.2x Wide angle:- With my equivalent 38-380mm lens it gives me an effective 27-270mm, which was very essential for Panoromic and Wide Angle Photography. The lens system fits tightly with the adapter. It comes with rubber covers and in a small cute leather pouch.

Macro:- A part of the Wide angle lens seperates out to form the solo Macro lens and gives around a 1.8x times magnification (1.7cm from 3cm). My C-765 already had a great macro mode. It enhances it further with almost no extra barrel distortion.

2.2x Telephoto lens:- This transforms my 38-380 lens of Olympus C-765 to 56.3-563mm lens. This fits tightly too . The autofocus of camera works fine with this. However when I used this lens there was a marked fall of image contrast and depth. The image is sharp in the center but the image was blurred out at the corners. Also the camera becomes very very bulky, you surely donot want to keep this attached unless you are really doing some serious wild-life type photography. It is necessary to support my C-765 camera firmly when using this because there is no anti-shake feature. This lens comes in a small leather pouch as well. I find it a little inconvinient to use.

The 4ft stand: Great stand for the price, and they give you a jacket too (not waterproof). It is very lightweight and is fine for ligtweight cameras like C-765. If you are thinking of using this same stand for heavier SLRs, think again!

The 3"stand: It is almost useless! It cannot support the weight of my C-765 and is unstable.

The UV, Polaroid and Flourescent filters: The Polaroid filter is very useful for me since I got it. I didnot need to use the Flourescent filter because Manual White-Balance of my camera does a better job. All these lenses come in a small sturdy pouch easy to carry places in your pocket.

Problems:-
1) You cannot use the camera lens-cap with the UV or Polaroid filter on. So you cannot probably keep the filters on continiously as suggested in the Opteka advt feature.

2) There is a considerable fish-eye distortion when I used the UV and Polaroid lens. They are plane lenses instead of the more distortion reducing Concav0-convex type. The horizons are never straight, and I have to use a softwere to correct all my pics eventually.

3) The Chromatic abberation becomes very visible at times when I use the Wide-angle ot Telephoto attachment. There is also a marked loss of contrast and depth in the picture and increased barrel distortion. (More the number of lens, lesser will be the picture crispiness)

4) The Wide angle and more so the Telephoto lens make the camera bulky, and it doesnot fit into my waistpouch with them on.
